Residency Induction

Overview

• The Aga Khan University’s Emergency Medicine Residency Programme is distinguished as the first CPSP-accredited residency in Pakistan. 

• It’s structured as a five-year training, with annual inductions. 

• Selection involves an entrance test and panel interviews.

Application

• Applications open in June or early July and are to be submitted online. 

• Required materials include a statement of purpose, two references, and personal as well as academic information. 

• The application fee of 5000 rupees can be paid via bank voucher or online.

Eligibility

Criteria

• MBBS from a PMC-recognized institution with at least a 55% score.

• Completion of a one-year internship, with six months each in Medicine and allied disciplines, and Surgery and allied disciplines.

• Mandatory FCPS Part I in medicine, surgery, or anesthesia and allied fields.

Applicants can sit the entrance test regardless of their FCPS Part I status, but must pass before the final merit list release in November.

Test

• The written test, held in August in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Islamabad, includes 100 MCQs—30 on English and 70 on medical topics. 

  • The English section makes up 10% of the total marks, assessing language skills such as comprehension, interpretation, and vocabulary. 

  • The medical section tests clinical knowledge pertinent to medical and surgical emergencies. 

• Preparation resources include the ‘Master the Boards Step 2 CK’ and the ‘Resident's Way to Residency’ for past papers.

Interviews

• Interviews are conducted in October at the Aga Khan Hospital’s Emergency Department, Karachi. 

• Typically, 30-40 candidates are shortlisted. 

• The interviews assess personal information, communication skills, dedication to emergency medicine, and clinical acumen.

Results

• Final results are announced in late November, offering 6-7 residency positions annually.

Health Check

• Candidates must undergo a medical examination including CBC, urine D&R, chest x-ray, and Hepatitis B status, followed by a physical examination.

Orientation

• The last week of December sees the Bootcamp at CIME, AKUH, Karachi. 

• This includes an orientation, online modules, and a Basic Life Support (BLS) course, aimed at acclimating new residents to the hospital environment.

Joining

• Formal joining procedures are managed by the HR department. 

• Required documents include an updated resume, NIC copies, mark sheets, FCPS Part-I pass certificate, valid PMDC license, NOC, last salary slip, and bank details (HBL, Soneri, Standard Chartered). 

• ID badges are issued subsequently and can be collected from the security office.
