Sponsorship
EM Gurus > Career Pathways > UK Pathway > Entry Routes > Sponsorship
Overview
When applying through sponsorship, you must demonstrate to the sponsor that you possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to practise as a fully registered medical practitioner in the UK. Each sponsor has their own pre-approved scheme by the GMC. This pathway enables you to obtain GMC registration without taking the PLAB or MRCEM exams.
Eligibility
Substantial clinical experience (at least three years).
Strong clinical knowledge.
Evidence of English language proficiency (OET or IELTS as per GMC criteria, which can be undertaken after selection).
Internal contacts to facilitate the process or find opportunities (advantageous).
Possession of a Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) acceptable to the GMC.
Verified ECFMG qualification documents.
Process
Identify Sponsorship Trusts: Begin by searching for and understanding the sponsorship bodies approved by the GMC.
Submit Applications via Trac: Use Trac to apply for job positions. Note that only those applications will be considered where GMC registration is not mandatory.
Apply Widely & Wait Patiently: Aim to apply for as many relevant positions as possible to increase your chances. Allow a reasonable amount of time to receive responses from potential employers.
Interview Expectations & Preparation: Be aware that only a few interview invitations may be extended. Be prepared for interviews, where you will be assessed on clinical knowledge, management skills, ethical considerations, teamwork, governance, and personal qualities.
GMC Sponsorship for GMC Registration: Secure a Sponsorship Registration Certificate (SRC), which is crucial for GMC registration. This is only achievable through approved sponsorship trusts, so direct your efforts towards these entities.
Certificate of Sponsorship for Visa Application: Acquire a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from the hospital, necessary for the visa application process. Be careful not to confuse this with the GMC sponsorship required for medical registration. This pathway allows you to apply for a Healthcare Visa (Tier 2).
