Overview
The internship program at AKU is a one-year training program.
Interns rotate six months in medicine and allied specialties, and six months in surgery and allied specialties.
This program is renowned as the best in Pakistan, providing insights into patient management while adhering to protocols and guidelines.
Interns work alongside top surgeons and physicians in Pakistan, supported by a highly competent nursing staff.
Application
Applications are invited by the PGME department through an official advertisement on the AKU website.
The advertisement typically appears in mid-June with a complete timeline.
Applicants must fill out a comprehensive online form and attach relevant documents, including a resume and personal statement.
Eligibility
Applications are accepted from fourth-year medical students, though preference is given to final-year students.
Final-year students can mark their final exam results as "awaited" and submit the results when shortlisted.
Graduates doing a house job or internship elsewhere can also apply.
Test
The AKU PGME department conducts the test in August or September.
The test consists of MCQ-based exams with scenario-based questions.
Interview
Shortlisted candidates undergo Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) conducted by the PGME department.
The MMI consists of 7-8 stations, each lasting 10-15 minutes, with scenarios on medical ethics and self-introduction.
Result
Results are announced online by the AKU PGME department in November or December.
Shortlisted candidates are called to submit the required documents.
Pre-Employment
Candidates must have a provisional license issued by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and a consolidated MBBS marksheet.
Orientation
The PGME arranges a 3-7 day orientation for new interns, covering routine insights, the SAHL software, and basic skills like sampling.
Joining
The PGME communicates the joining date to each candidate.
Traditionally, inductions were in Feb/March/April, but the plan is to start from January 1st in the upcoming academic calendar.
