Overview
Mayo Hospital: A tertiary care facility with 2500 beds, affiliated with King Edward Medical University (KEMU). Established in 1871, it stands as one of the oldest and largest hospitals in Pakistan.
The Adult Emergency Department currently has 235 beds, with a separate Paediatrics Emergency Department housing 100 beds.
Duration
A comprehensive five-year Emergency Medicine residency program is offered.
Rotations
Years 1 & 2:
Initial 4 months in Adult Emergency, followed by 2 months in Paediatrics Emergency.
Subsequent 3-month rotations in Anesthesia, ICU/CCU, Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and Orthopedics.
Years 3 to Final:
Spend 1 year in Paediatric Emergency, with 4-month rotations annually.
Additional rotations cover 1 month in Radiology and 2 weeks each in Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, EMS, and Toxicology.
The remaining time, nearly 2 years, is dedicated to adult emergency, including rotations.
Work
12-hour shifts with 4 weekly duties.
Equal distribution of 15 morning and night shifts per month.
Teaching
Bi-weekly sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays for topic discussions, presentations, and journal clubs.
Bedside classes every Monday and Thursday focusing on clinical knowledge and procedures.
Biannual review sessions for ATLS, PALS, and ACLS courses.
Induction
Applications for MD and FCPS programs open biannually in January and July, following the Central Induction Policy.
Research
Residents are required to achieve at least 1 publication during their residency, in addition to fulfilling FCPS/MD requirements.
